The Beer Mile Challenge originated from North America and it consist of drinking 4 bottles or cans of beer ( 330ml and at least 5% alcohol) and running a total of 1.6km ( or one mile) around the running track. Participants will need to drink one time and run one round. Complete the 4 cycles to be considered as completing the BEER MILE.
Mr James Nielsen from North America was the person who brought the Beer mile to attention by his record of below 5 min for drinking and running. It is really not easy, but he managed to clock the record. For ladies, it is Beth Herndon from Austin Texas, she did the Beer mile in 6min 17s.
Indemnity and Safety Concerns
Drinking and running is actually not encouraged. In the long term, it dehydrated the body and affects the liver function too. But in this case, we have ensured that most of the participants were aware of what they were getting into. We also briefed the participants to take their own ParQ test before coming to the challenge. So they were already well aware what they were getting themselves into. In fact many of them were good drinkers and runners. So this was not something new to them. Also since that this is only once a year. We felt it should not be that detrimental to the participants.
We started to do the Facebook invite about 2 weeks before the exact date, many people had expressed interest, but some were not able to join us as it was the holiday season and many of them brought their families out of town for an overseas holiday. Many of them also volunteered as volunteers to help us out for this time round. It was indeed very heart warming for us as it was really meant to be just a fun get together for the year end event.
The Singapore Challenge
18th December 2015, Friday night , 7pm, Toa Payoh Stadium, a group of crazy runners gathered to do their first Beer Mile together here at the tracks. Really did not expect that there will be so many turning up as I thought many of the runners are not keen of getting drunk and running at the same time. The 19 participants were able to complete the run and drinks without casualty. The fastest was Mr Ning Wen Long, who took barely over 10 minutes. Although there is not time limit, the longer you drag the drink and run, the faster the alcohol will be able to kick into your system. You will realise you might not be able to hold your drink or even feel concussed without even realising it !
Well before the start time at 7 pm, we already saw participants streaming in. Some of them even brought their own cambro cooler to chill the drinks for the session. There were also snacks and some even brought their kids to come and support the event. It was more like a beer picnic rather than a Beer Mile Challenge.
Most of us by the second round were getting really high and happy. As the alcohol starts to sink into our blood stream, somehow you start to run faster and keep laughing along the way !
Making Friends and Taking Funny Pictures
Not only did we have volunteers to come and support us as we ran along, some acted as cleaners to help us clear up the bottles and cans that were strewn along the way. The photographers were also some of the supporters that helped to take pictures for this fun filled event.
Some of these photographers were in fact participants themselves! I think the pictures speak a thousand words, let us look at some of the funny snap shots after we have a couple of drinks. I hope this year, we can conduct a cocktail or mixology of alcohol challenge!
