Been a long time since I did the Income run. The last time I had managed a good result for it. Hoping to break a better timing for 21km, I signed up for this race. What is more important is that this year they have the Zero waste runner category, meaning you pay much much lesser but does not take the entitlement of medals, finisher tee and goodie bag.
The zero waste runner category is a new initiative. Taking this option not only save costs for registration but also save the earth. Sometimes I felt having so many medals, event and finishers’ tee very troublesome because not all have good quality and size might not fit.
RACE PACK COLLECTION
Did not manage to go to this one as I was in Guam doing the marathon. Apparently there was a farmers’ market over there.
RACE DAY
The HM starts at 5am, waking up early is mandatory for this case. A friend living nearby was going to do the 10km, I thought since it is a green run, I will car pool him along. But poor guy got to wake up early before his race which will only start at 6:30 am. We reach the Singapore Flyers around 4:15 in the morning. Good thing was there were no road blocks to the carpark and there were ample parking space in the vicinity.
Race start and village is at the F1 pit itself. Runners can also bag drop there. Organisers also offer bus services to fetch runners to the venue at early hours. Being a zero waste run, there were not much fancy stuff around. A lot of information on recycling and how to care for the environment were displayed around.
Zero waste runners were given a plastic soft cup for you to run with it. They can collect hydration at the water points using the cup, thus eliminating the waste of paper cups and plastic cups. That being said, the water stations still has disposable cups to cater to the runners. As usual, I brought my own hydration belt. But the soft cup is really helpful when you need to have a small drink at the stations.
I felt that Income run is always not very crowded and nice to run in. The route is quite similar to the previous years. Majority of the route with within the Kallang and Bay Area. Only some elevation in the beginning when going down the Nicoll Highway and also towards the 16km there is a route up the barrage. It can be scenic but quite a torture.
Water points are well aligned out, and they have 100plus with plain water. Toilets along the way can be found at Sports Hub, Gardens by the Bay East, Marina Barrage and the Gardens by the Bay.
FINISHING LINE
Finishing line is at the F1 pit where the race village is at. Being a zero waste runner, I was not given the finisher tee shirt and the medal. But you will get the usual banana and 100 plus replenishment.
Runners can chill around the F1 pit area while waiting for their friends to return. At the same time, volunteers will show you how you can save the earth with some recycling tips. There is also a massage area for those who need a knead after the race.
OVERALL
I do not know if it is fate or something, I always enjoyed the Income run although it is no frills. It is always nice to run minimal and also do a small part for the environment. Taking the cheap registration price, I will be likely to join back again next year. Kudos to the organizer for such a well organised race.
