Spartan Race Singapore

Joining this race was actually for support of a friendly cause.  I had never liked the idea about going for runs that requires one to do obstacles.  Maybe I am not that combat fit myself, as such I am never enticed to do such races.  After doing pole for some time, I was lucky to be able to do some simple pull ups and core exercises.  This really helped in the race itself.

Venue

The race venue was at the southern part of Singapore comprising of the Grass patch at the Nicoll High Way MRT Station, the F1 Pit area, and some grass area along Kallang river.

Race Information

Basically you can join this race as an individual or as a group of 2 to as many as you want.  There are basically three types of races, SPRINT, SUPER and BEAST.  The distance and obstacles are herewith:

Sprint: 5+ KM and 15+ Obstacles to clear:  In Singapore, the distance is about 8km and there were 20+ obstacles to clear.

Super: 13+KM and 20 + Obstacles.

Beast: 20+km and 25+ Obstacles.

There is also one for the kids called Spartan Junior. These races, 400 – 800 metres in distance, have an emphasis on teamwork, fun and getting muddy.  It is more like bringing the old days childhood to the children.

The price was about $88 for early bird and when the early bird pass it is $168.  So it is really quite expensive to begin with.  However, I guess it is because of the set ups and safety coverage for the race that makes it kinda expensive.  You get a race tee, finisher tee and a finisher medal.  There were as usual free passes and isotonic drinks 🙂

The Spartan Tri Fecta

Racers who complete all 3 Spartan distances (Sprint, Super, and Beast or ultra Beast) in no particular order within one calendar year earn their trifecta. Races anywhere in the world count towards this honor.  As the organisers will keep a common record of the athletes who have completed the race.  They will reward the complete racers with a medal.  The race season starts as of January and ends December per calendar year.

The Obstacles

There were a lot of low walls, high walls, nets, low ropes, monkey bars etc.  Basically it is like the Standard Obstacles Course in the Army.  You will need to train your arms and limbs to be able to participate in the race successfully.  But being able to do all these muscular stuff and running is quite a challenge because for most of the body builders, they are more focused on the Muscle training part.  Being able to run is quite a challenge for them.

Saw many strong ladies in the race too.  I guess for them the plus point is that they are lighter and more agile.  This really helps as the race goes on, it can get really taxing on the body.

The race village has quite a lot of booths showcasing health products and also REEBOK items on sale.  Complete participants also get a can of beer.  However, these are not chilled beers.  There were changing areas for you to clean yourself up.  However, there were no showers only toilets.  I guess most of the races in Singapore are not into having showers for their participants.

It was a race well done and interesting but next year I will likely go for the early bird price if possible !
